IBIAS

Mission Statement

IBIAS is an evidence-based program that trains future nurses by integrating bias-interrupting skills into their nursing training.

The program pairs top-of-the-line nursing skills training with top-of-the-field care to equip nurses with ALL the skills needed to transform healthcare.

Our nurses excel with bias-interrupting skills.

Implicit biases among healthcare workers lead to poorer experiences and increased mortality rates for many marginalized groups. IBIAS helps nurses of all backgrounds identify and interrupt implicit bias as a direct complement to traditional nursing skills.

The Challenge

We all have implicit bias. These unconscious attitudes affect our understanding, actions, and decisions every day. But in healthcare, implicit bias can be fatal. Research shows that implicit biases among healthcare workers lead to poorer experiences for patients.

It leads to some patients receiving better maternal care than others, pain management being provided to certain patients but not others, and some people not being heard, believed, or even treated.

studies found implicit bias among health care providers.

All studies that explored correlation found a positive relationship between provider bias and lower quality of care.

Biases studied include:

  • racial/ethnic
  • gender
  • socio-economic status
  • age
  • mental illness
  • weight
  • brain-injury
  • intravenous drug users
  • disability
  • AIDS patients
  • social circumstances

The Solution

We can’t prevent implicit bias from happening, but we can interrupt it before it impacts our patient’s healthcare. That’s where IBIAS comes in.

IBIAS is an evidence-based program that trains future nurses to demonstrate and reflect on two or more bias-interrupting skills each day they provide care during their nursing training.
